Ever had a wine that made you…

Today’s #SommelierSips post is truly the wine that will send you into orbit, if you’ve never experienced such a relationship with a grape!

The winery:  Marqués de Griñón

Fun Winery Facts:  Marqués de Griñón wines are sourced from the prized Dominio de Valdepusa vineyard in Castilla-La Mancha. Valdepusa stands apart from the rest of the region, as its 1068-foot elevation is one of the highest in Spain, and its top layer of soil is similar to Burgundy’s — it is almost pure limestone.

Nerdy Fun Vineyard Facts:  In 2003, Dominio de Valdepusa became the first estate to receive DO de Pago, the highest level in the Spanish classification system. This level was introduced that same year and designates single estates of exceptional quality that exhibit the special characteristics of a pago. A pago is a landmass with indigenous vegetation that differentiates itself from the surrounding environment by soil type or microclimate. The site must have historically produced wines of exceptional quality and the single vineyard name must have been in use for at least five years. The vineyard site must be smaller than the communal or municipal boundary where it is located and there must be a quality-control system in place that complies at minimum with the regulations for a DOCa.
The winemaker:  Dominio de Valdepusa has been in the noble family of Carlos Falcó Fernandez de Córdova, the Marquis of Griñón, since 1292 (!!!). Referred to as the father of Spanish wine, Falcó pioneered the modernization of vine growing and winemaking in Spain.  In 1974, he introduced the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grape varieties as well as drip irrigation and night harvesting.
The Wine: 2005 Petit Verdot  ~ A wine that I tasted for the first time almost nine years ago.  AtIMG_7870 the time, one of my favorite Spanish wines.  To this day – one of THE most delicious 100% Petit Verdots I have ever put my lips on.  And still, one of my favorite Spanish wines!
The wine is seductively alluring and encapsulating the second you put your nose to it!  Super juicy berry spice notes take over the senses as peaks of pepper and bright lilac float the surface.  Jumping from the glass, this wine only shows more personality as you allow it to sit with some oxygen.  Dark, jammy and delicious – the wine is a complete lip smacker.  Textured with an herbal backbone, notes of licorice, cocoa and black cherry waft in and out of the palate’s profile.

Just Yum, Yum, Yum!

Dude, for $42 – this is a ridiculous wine for its price-point.

A serious, serious steal!

Where to get it:  Check in with my pal, Chuck, at Solo Vino.  If the wine’s not on his shelf within the week, he’ll be sure to order it in for you!
