Tis the Season for Mulled Wine!

I love this time of year as the familiar sound of the Salvation Army bells, twinkly multicolored lights and holiday music warm even the chilliest of Minnesotans.  On top of that, almost everywhere I go I run into Mr. and Mrs. Claus!

While yes, all of the above is an absolute bonus, my favorite part of the holiday season is that it is the only season that I get to have fun concocting a variety of mulled wineIMG_1014 recipes!

I’ve experimented with a few, some better than others.  Yet, I found a new one this week while cruising the Pinterest pages of Food & Wine Magazine from New York Chef, Michael Psilakis.  Here’s his recipe for ‘foolproof’ Mulled Wine.

Heat the following ingredients together…

  • a dry red wine
  • allspice
  • cloves
  • cinnamon sticks
  • 1/4 cup brandy
  • orange segments
  • orange zest
  • For a touch of sweetness, he suggests adding sugar

The result?  A delicious, festive drink to keep you warm during the holidays.

My suggestion for that ‘dry red wine’ Michael suggests, is to look for a red wine that also has some of the same characteristics that the recipe has listed (IE: baking spices, brandied, with bits of orange to the body).  I might check out:  Syrah, Merlot or even a nice combo like Côtes du Rhône (typically Grenache & Syrah) to combine some of these similar flavors together.
